Northwest GT3 Challenge : Round 1 : Catalunya

There were clear skies, a late summer sun, and a light breeze at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Montmeló, Catalonia, Spain. But it was the glistening asphalt track and a low-hum of engines roaring down the back straight as they dive into La Caixa that truly brings out the beauty in what is considered to be one of the best F1 tracks in the world. It was the perfect setting for an exciting afternoon of racing.

Drivers line up along the back stretch prior to the green flag at Catalunya on Monday, Sept 21st, 2020. The aptly named Northwest GT3 Challenge proved its namesake on Monday. Tough competition kept Sven Hartman and Nicholas Boccanfuso in the back of the pack most of the day. With Hartman finishing P19, and Boccanfuso finishing the race early with damage in P36.

The session started off well for both drivers as they put in several hot laps during the 20 minute session, but they were unable to crack the top half of the grid in what looked to be quite stiff competition. Hartman took the grid in 28th with a time of 1:47.718 and Boccanfuso in 38th with a time of 1:51.520. The leader with a 1:44.932 in the Audi R8.

After the drop of the green flag, there was immediate action up and down the field as multiple groups were three wide by the time they took turn 1.

After contact with a teammate, Gavin Cone, RSR-AM #23 went around on the front straight right after the green flag dropped at Catalunya on Monday, Sept 21st, 2020. Narrowly missing the inside wall and continuing across the track through traffic.

Lap 1 entertainment didn't stop there as second place qualifier Chris Brunnemer, #2 Pacific Sim Motorsports Ferrari, went around coming out of turn 9 (Campsa). Stopping in traffic & leaving little room for the emerging cars coming around the fast uphill right hander.
